£20 million Basingstoke roundabout improvements completed in time for Christmas

Brighton Hill Roundabout in Basingstoke is now fully open after a £20 million improvement scheme delivered by Hampshire County Council which will reduce congestion and make journey times more reliable for road users

Dec 12 2023

The project was substantially completed at the end of November. This week, commencing 11 December 2023, the new traffic lights have been switched on and all road/lane restrictions removed.

Councillor Nick Adams-King, the County Council’s Cabinet Lead for Universal Services, said: “I am pleased that this major traffic improvement scheme has been completed on schedule, by the end of winter 2023. The new roundabout is an important part of our plans to improve access to Basingstoke along the A30 corridor making travel easier for road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Upgrading the road network here will also support the area’s regeneration by encouraging investment and generating jobs. We know there has been disruption during construction of the roundabout and I’d like to thank everyone for their patience over this time.”

The A30 roundabout has been designed to reduce congestion by widening the road to increase traffic capacity whilst new traffic signals aim to manage traffic flow more efficiently. Toucan crossings have also been installed to enable people to cross safely. Tree and vegetation replanting has been designed to maximise species diversity, provide plants for pollinators and look attractive.

The scheme has also delivered a new three metre wide fully segregated walking and cycling route alongside the existing footway in Brighton Way, between the Brighton Hill Roundabout and Sullivan Road.

The County Council appointed Milestone Infrastructure to construct the roundabout improvements. The scheme has been funded with £11.6 million from the EM3 Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund and £7.65 million from Hampshire County Council.

Stephen Martin, Managing Director of Enterprise M3 LEP, said: “We are delighted to have played a part in improving Brighton Hill Roundabout and are especially pleased the work has been completed in time for the extra busy Christmas period. This should significantly ease traffic congestion along this key access route that links several residential, retail and business areas with the town centre. While we appreciate there has been disruption to local residents, we are sure the improvements will bring huge benefits to those living and working in the immediate area, as well as across the wider Basingstoke community.”

Brighton Hill Roundabout is a key junction on Basingstoke’s A30 South West corridor - a critical strategic route between the M3 Junction 7, the Ringway and adjoining links to Basingstoke’s retail and commercial centre.
