Smart Living Pledges include:
- Always taking a reusable water bottle with you to refill.
- Always taking a reusable bag when shopping.
- Replacing plastic bottles of soap, bodywash and shampoo with solid bars or refilling them.
Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change, Councillor Zoe Huggins said, “If we all do our bit by planning for what we need when out and about and finding novel ways to reuse or repurpose what we already own, the impact on climate change could be huge in terms of reducing carbon emissions, both now and for the future generations in Hampshire.”
In Hampshire, all household plastic bottles such as drinks, milk, shampoo, and cleaning product bottles can be accepted in kerbside recycling collections.
Executive Member for Waste at Hampshire County Council, Councillor Lulu Bowerman said, “Choosing to stop buying single-use plastics, such as throw away plastic cups or food wrap, and seeking out reusable alternatives, not only helps tackle climate change, but cuts waste, minimises the cost of plastic waste disposal, and also has the added benefit of reducing plastic litter – which we know is unsightly and harmful to our wildlife.”
Pledges can be made using the Smart Living Pledge online tool, where residents choose which changes to commit to and join friends, family, or colleagues in pledge-making, and sharing ideas on how best to stick to each pledge.
Taking the Pesky Plastics Quiz shows the kinds of plastics that can ‘sneak’ into the weekly shopping trolley unnoticed.
Residents can make pledges in July and look out for further pledges at a later time.
More information on other ways to reduce your consumption of single-use plastics can be found on the Smart Living website.
