The proposal is to amalgamate the schools into a primary school with one class of 30 pupils per year group under one governing body. This would provide a stronger financial position, staffing structure and settled pupil numbers. It would also bring greater continuity in terms of how the curriculum is delivered and a more consistent approach to children’s learning, while removing the need for transition between Year 2 in the infant school to Year 3 in the junior school.
With proposals of this nature, there is a statutory process that must be followed. This begins with an initial phase of public consultation which, subject to that outcome, is followed by a further period of statutory public consultation.
The initial consultation period is now underway and runs until 15 December. This will gather feedback on the proposal to close Peel Common Infant School and extend the age range of the junior school to become a primary school with a nursery unit, catering for children aged three to 11 years.
Parents, carers and others with an interest in the proposals will have an opportunity to share their views and ask questions at two public meetings, to be held on the following dates:
- Tuesday 28 November, 3.30pm-5.30pm – Peel Common Infant School
- Tuesday 5 December, 3.30pm-5.30pm – Peel Common Junior School
Should a final decision be made to merge the two schools, this would come into effect on 1 January 2025. The school would continue to offer 30 places for children entering Reception Year.
