Councillor Kirsty North, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Universal Services, said: “The new location of the interchange will help people to make onward connections to the Gosport Ferry Terminal more easily, for travel to Portsmouth Harbour and rail station as well as the Isle of Wight. The scheme will also unlock wider regeneration plans for Gosport, to create a more vibrant and attractive town centre.”
Further changes to the high street give priority to buses over other road vehicles, bringing buses back to the town centre so that passengers have easier access to shops, services and other facilities, making travel by bus a genuine alternative to the car.
Councillor Peter Chegwyn, Leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: "I'm delighted that the new bus interchange is complete, offering a bright and modern space for people travelling to and from Gosport town centre. The new bus route through South Cross St will also help bring more footfall to the heart of our high street. This milestone means we can progress our ambitious plans for regenerating Gosport's waterfront and creating a new gateway to the borough."
Gosport’s main taxi rank and drop-off/pick up point has been relocated to South Street, opposite the former bus station. The short stay car park at Falkland Gardens has also been moved to the southern side of The Esplanade.
The £6 million project has been funded from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund designed to improve walking, cycling and bus travel, with funding and support from Gosport Borough Council.
