Hampshire honours achievements at Supported Internship Awards

The supported interns, all with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), impressed judges while undertaking a comprehensive programme of study and on-the-job training, building a range of essential skills to help them enter the world of work.

The event, funded by the Department for Education as part of its Internships Work programme, also recognised the vital contribution of local employers and teachers to the interns’ success.

Councillor Steve Forster, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Education, said: “As Hampshire County Council continues to champion inclusivity and support for young people with additional needs, this award ceremony marks a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and diverse workforce and reinforces our belief that young people with SEND deserve the opportunity to succeed – although we always need more employers to come forward. 

“Supported internships are a vital bridge for these young individuals, providing them with ‘real world’ work experiences, skills development and confidence. By offering a unique blend of classroom learning and practical placements within supportive workplaces, these internships ensure that no one is left behind in their journey toward independence and employment.

“I’d like to congratulate all involved in this unique event, from those individuals and organisations being recognised, to the young people who helped put the event together alongside Hampshire County Council’s specialist SEND employability team."

The ceremony recognised students who demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience in their internships. Notable winners included Chloe Pattinson (Basingstoke) for Achievement in the Classroom, Callum Fuoco-Boyd (Farnborough) for Achievement in the Workplace, Riley Blackman (Basingstoke) for Overcoming Barriers, and Mia Etherington-Smith (Basingstoke) for Outstanding Achievement.

Staff members were honoured for their innovative and inclusive approaches to teaching and supporting SEND students. Helen Robinson from HSDC (Havant, South Downs and Alton Colleges) was named Most Supportive Member of Staff, and Eastleigh College (South Hampshire College Group) was recognised as the Most Supportive Education Provider.

Employers who have embraced inclusive practices were also celebrated, with Holiday Inn, Farnborough, named as the Most Supportive Employer.
