Totton Station improvements are just the ticket for passengers needing step-free access

Passengers using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs will find it much easier to travel to and from Totton rail station’s southern platform following the completion of new access facilities

Aug 15 2024

The improvements, which include a new level footpath connecting to Totton High Street, mean that passengers who cannot use stairs travelling on trains from Southampton towards the New Forest and Bournemouth, will no longer have to travel on to Brockenhurst to then return to Totton’s step-free north platform to get on and off the train.

The scheme has been delivered by Hampshire County Council, working in partnership with South Western Railway and Network Rail with additional support from the Department for Transport's Access for All fund.

Councillor Lulu Bowerman the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways said: “These improvements will make travel to and from Totton by rail much more convenient for many passengers - including anyone using a wheelchair, parents of young children, and people carrying heavy bags. We have worked closely with South Western Railway to deliver this much-needed scheme.”

Peter Williams, Customer and Commercial Director for South Western Railway, commented: “This new level footway, linking the high street to Totton’s westbound platform, will make journeys more accessible and convenient for customers using the station, particularly those with pushchairs, luggage or reduced mobility. We know the big difference these accessibility improvements make for customers and our local communities, allowing them to travel more independently, which is why we work so hard with local stakeholders and partners to secure the funding required. I would like to thank our partners in Totton, including Hampshire County Council and Network Rail, for helping us to deliver this important project.”

Alastair Welch, ABP Regional Director said: “We are very pleased to have provided the land necessary for the new access route at Totton train station. It is great to see that the project is complete; it will make a significant difference to the community and visitors in the area.”
In addition to construction of the new level footpath connecting the southern platform to Totton High Street, the improvements include resurfacing existing footpaths, and new street lighting.
