Also, as part of the upgrade, a new crossing will be constructed over Worthy Road, south of the junction with Stoke Road, to connect with the recently opened Kings Barton pedestrian and cycle route - via Stoke Road and Courtenay Road - and the existing cycle-friendly routes through Abbotts Barton into the city centre. A new crossing will also be built on Stoke Road. The crossings will be parallel crossings or zebra crossings - this is a combined pedestrian and cycle crossing which is not signalised but will have Belisha beacons.
To enable construction work to take place safely, from Monday 21 October, two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place along Worthy Road, and Dyson Drive will be closed at its junction with Worthy Road, with access being maintained via Chaundler Road.
To reduce congestion resulting from higher volumes of traffic expected in Winchester for the Christmas shopping period, the temporary traffic lights will be removed on Worthy Road between 22 November 2024 to 6 January 2025. In addition, traffic management will be removed from Dyson Drive and Stoke Road on 16 December 2024 until 6 January 2025.
On Saturday 11 January 2025, Stoke Road will be closed from the junction of Worthy Road with access maintained via Courtenay Road.
Completion of the scheme is scheduled for spring 2025. However, as much of the work is weather dependent, the anticipated programme may be subject to change.
The permitted working hours will be Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm, and Saturdays between 10am and 4pm.
Emergency vehicle access to properties and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, with a pedestrian diversion route in place.
A site compound with welfare facilities for construction staff will be located on the grassed area between Dyson Drive and Francis Gardens. This will be fully reinstated when the scheme is finished.
Details on traffic management, road closures and diversion routes will be available on the County Council’s scheme web page at: https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/transportschemes/worthy-road-improvements
