Proposals for secure dog field next to Crab Wood near Winchester unveiled by Hampshire County Council

Dog owners in and around Winchester could soon enjoy the use of a secure dog field, under proposals by Hampshire County Council to create a pay-to-use facility next to Crab Wood

The aim, if planning approval is granted, is to provide a safe area for people to exercise and train their dogs off the leash. Providing additional space for dog walkers to use would also reduce the impact of dog walking on Crab Wood Local Nature Reserve, helping to protect this important Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Councillor Kirsty North, the County Council’s Cabinet Lead for Universal Services, said: “Many more people own a dog since the Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to a rise in people walking their pets in Hampshire’s popular countryside areas. Under this proposal, dog owners could enjoy the use of a secure field next to Crab Wood offering a safe, controlled place to exercise and socialise with their four-legged companions. As an ancient woodland, Crab Wood is an extremely special site for many species including bluebells, and we hope that a facility of this type would be a welcome addition. The income generated would go towards the set up and upkeep of the facility, and contribute to our work protecting Hampshire’s magnificent countryside, at a time when budgets are under extreme pressure.”

A planning application for two secure dog fields (which would be positioned on cleared, non-wooded areas) on Lanham Lane has been submitted to Winchester City Council for consideration. If approval was given, the new facility could be opened this autumn.

The proposed design of the facility seeks to complement the natural environment, accessed only by customers who have booked in advance and would also include a small number of dedicated parking spaces.
