Could you swap your car for a bike this summer?

With longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures now is the perfect time to consider cycling. To help encourage people to get around on two wheels, the County Council has created a one-stop-shop website with everything you’ve ever wanted to know about cycling in Hampshire

The new Life's Better by Bike website has lots of useful content for seasoned cyclists as well as anyone new to cycling, with information on:

  • journey planning,
  • bikeability courses – to help develop your confidence to ride on the road,
  • dedicated cycling routes in the countryside,
  • access to cycling groups, where you can meet likeminded people,
  • inclusive cycling options for people with disabilities, and
  • top tips to help new cyclists get started.

Councillor Liz Fairhurst, Cabinet Lead Member for Adult Social Care and Public Health, said: “Cycling is a great way to boost your mood and improve your health. However, starting to cycle regularly on the road can be daunting if you’re new to it. But there are ways to build up your confidence. Planning your route, going for test rides at the weekend and speaking to seasoned cyclists can help you feel more self-assured. And swapping even a few short car trips for the bike, or walking if you prefer, can make all the difference to your health and wellbeing, so it’s worth trying.”

Councillor Zoe Huggins, Executive Member for Hampshire 2050 (Climate Change), added: “Cycling is a cheap, environmentally friendly form of travel and helps to cut traffic congestion. I would encourage residents to explore our new website and make cycling part of their lifestyle.”

The County Council is investing in road infrastructure projects to help make it easier to travel by bike in Hampshire. There’s a new cycle link between Eastleigh and Southampton and walking and cycling upgrades to Havant Town Centre have recently been completed. Residents can go online to find further details of more than a dozen other transport improvement schemes in the pipeline.

The County Council is also offering grants - that district and borough councils can bid for - to fund active travel projects, such as cycle training, workplace and school travel plans, and bike hire schemes, aimed at reducing car usage and promoting healthier, eco-friendly transport options.

Additional journey planning information and alternative travel guidance can be found on the My Journey website.
