Walking and cycling improvements agreed for Havant’s Petersfield Road

A proposed scheme valued at over £679,000, for walking and cycling improvements along the Petersfield Road cycle route in Havant has been approved by Hampshire County Council

Jan 28 2022

Agreeing the proposal at his recent decision day (27 January) Councillor Russell Oppenheimer, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways Operations, said: “I am pleased to agree these improvements to the NCN22 cycle route in Havant. The scheme will enhance the NCN22 Cycle route in Leigh Road, Eastern Road, and Elmleigh Road in Havant, and ensure it complies with the current cycle design guidance as set out by the Government.

“Furthermore, extending the number of available cycle routes locally will help to encourage people to walk and cycle more for local journeys and to leave the car at home. Fewer car journeys, in turn, will lead to a reduction in carbon emissions and help Hampshire towards its goal of preparing to be resilient to a two per cent temperature rise.”

The scheme is to be funded from Department for Transport (DfT) Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) Development Pilot Programme funding.

The County Council, has designed the scheme in partnership with walking and cycling charity, Sustrans, and work is expected to be completed on site before the end of summer 2022.

The scheme includes:
A new, raised-table, uncontrolled pedestrian/cycle crossing will be installed where Leigh Road terminates outside the Parkway Centre. This will reduce conflict between pedestrians and cyclist where pedestrians will have priority.
Providing a new Zebra crossing in Leigh Road at its junction with Eastern Road and Elmleigh Road.
The removal of the centre line of Eastern Road just west of the junction with New Lane and the installation of on road cycle markings on the carriageway, as well as the installation of two priority give way build outs along Eastern Road just to the west of Centenary Gardens in order to encourage slower vehicle speeds in the road.
The narrowing of the junction of Eastern Road and Leigh Road in order to widen the footpaths on either side of the road creating more space for pedestrians.

The County Council is also delivering a further cycle scheme within Elmleigh Road, Havant, as part of the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Transforming Cities fund (TCF) programme.
