The westbound lane closure has been in place for some time to enable the construction of an improvement scheme that will positively support economic growth in the area and reduce congestion, make bus journey times more reliable, and also provide better walking and cycling routes.
The project has been delivered by the County Council with funding from the EM3 Local Enterprise Partnership and the Government’s Active Travel Fund, alongside contributions from developers.
Councillor Nick Adams-King, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Lead for Universal Services, said: “I’m pleased the road can reopen now that we have reached the final stage of this major road improvement scheme in the area to increase road capacity to reduce congestion, support economic growth and housing development now and in the future. We are also providing better facilities for walkers, cyclists and people using mobility scooters which will help to cut car use for shorter journeys and improve air quality. I know that the delivery of this project has caused disruption in the local area and I’d like to again thank everyone, including local businesses, for their patience while the traffic diversions were in place. I would now encourage more people to visit the North Camp area, and its many independent shops. Following these upgrades, this can be done more easily on foot or on wheels.”
While most of the work is now finished allowing the road to reopen, some final remaining elements of the scheme will be completed during March. This includes:
• Overnight surfacing work on short sections of footpath and cycle path between Morris Road and Peabody Road. This will take place between 20:00–06:00 on Friday 1 March and Saturday 2 March and will require temporary traffic lights.
• Installation of coloured overlay and road markings on Lynchford Road cycleway including the Morris Road junction. This is planned to be completed by the middle of March.
• Completion of the final elements of the Alexandra Road bus lane scheme which will require one overnight closure - work is planned for 20 March. Further details will be communicated to residents ahead of the work.
The package of important upgrades includes an additional eastbound traffic lane on the approach to the Park Road roundabout to reduce traffic congestion at busy times; a new segregated cycle path to better connect to the cycle path east of Alexandra Road through to Park Road; and the introduction of bus priority measures on the B3403 to speed up bus journey times.
