Pre-planning Consultation - Alderwood School (Senior), Tongham Road

This pre-planning consultation will run for 4 weeks from Monday 6 November 2023 to Monday 4 December 2023.

The Proposal

With the support of the headteacher and governing body at the school, and further to the approval from the Director of Children’s Services in June 2023 to progress the project which will see the physical capacity of Alderwood School increased to allow them to offer 60 additional places in Year 7 (age 11+) from September 2025. This expansion will increase the Year 7 published admission number to 140 student places. This combined with the 90 children who automatically transfer from the school’s primary phase to Year 7 in the school’s secondary phase, will create 230 year 7 places and a total capacity of 1,150 student places across all five year groups.

The demand for additional school places is a result of a rise in the number of children reaching secondary school age and new housing developments in the area.

Hampshire County Council is proposing to demolish the 1950’s technology block and in its place construct a two-story building containing modern technology, general teaching and science labs. This will link to the existing 1980’s science block which will have a full refurb and new roof as part of the proposals.

The finished new block will contain:

• 9 science labs (6 refurbished and 3 new)
• 2 new science prep rooms and a chemical store
• 2 new resistant materials classrooms with a multi store
• 1 new textiles classroom
• 1 new graphics classroom
• 5 new general teaching classrooms
• 1 new group/office space
• New accessible, staff, boys and girls w.c’s

External landscaping works will provide:

• a new fence line to improve safeguarding and create a barrier between pupils and the car park
• 3 new grab and go containers for student break and lunchtime use
• 25 additional staff car parking spaces including 2 more accessible bays
• 2 electric charging points to serve 4 parking bays
• 12 new scooter places to replace 12 existing places
• 70 new student bike places to replace 40 existing places
• 6 new teacher bike places
• 1 new motorbike space

A drop-in session where you will be able to discuss the proposal with County Council Officers will take place on Monday 20 November 2023 at Alderwood School (Senior), Tongham Road between 4pm and 7pm.
