HTM: Sustainability

Hampshire needs to be carbon neutral by 2050 to help tackle climate change. To reach this goal, we’re committed to reducing emissions and finding new sustainable ways to keep Hampshire moving. This includes building a more environmentally responsible fleet with reduced emissions, and a more sustainable approach to fuel and vehicle use.

Carbon reduction

An important step towards carbon neutrality is reducing our carbon emissions.

E-vehicles

Our pool car fleet is now comprised of fully-electric, zero emission Vauxhall Corsa-E vehicles.

HVO fuel

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a 100% renewable by-product of the food industry. Compared to ULSD (Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel), HVO offers a significant reduction of 90% in CO2 Emissions and a 27% decrease in nitrogen oxides. It also releases virtually no particulates.

By using HVO fuel instead of ULSD at our fuel depots, we’ve made incredible carbon emission savings. HVO allows for engines to run more cleanly and efficiently, which also lowers maintenance costs as well as helping the environment.

Total carbon emissions savings April-June 2022: 430,541.96 kg CO2e.

Waste, recycling, and renewable resources

Where possible, we try to make use of our waste products and available technology to make our services as sustainable as possible.

This includes:

  • recycling used oil, batteries, fuel filters and oil filters
  • exchanging old parts for new ones, so that the old parts can be refurbished and used again
  • collecting scrap metal which is sent away to be recycled into something new
  • collect rainwater in our brine plant bund so it can be used by salt spreaders on the roads
  • installing solar panels at Petersfield, Micheldever and Bishop’s Waltham workshops

Our awards

We’re only just getting started on our journey towards sustainable travel, but our contribution has already begun to be recognised.
