Activities to consider

  • Anything related to improving the conditions for research and development. Could link to food fraud and product traceability work;
  • Acting as a conduit between the private sector and higher education (triple helix approach);
  • Business support sector;
  • Develop new social innovation products / processes

Example project

Innovation Bridge (Central Bedfordshire Council) – providing free access to expertise so businesses can grow and innovate.

Funding programme used: ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).

Enhancing access to and use and quality of ICT

Activities to consider

  • Further roll-out of high speed digital networks in areas of market failure
  • Encouraging businesses and residents to exploit broadband technology
  • ICT applications/ solutions to support delivery of public services

Example project

I-Stay@Home (HABINTEG Housing Association).Investigating how ICT can support elderly and disabled people against future challenges such as isolation, security, disability, health, financial hardship and independent living.

Funding programme used: Interreg IVb North West Europe (NWE)

Enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs

Activities to consider

  • Building capacity of existing businesses
  • Ensuring businesses reach their growth potential
  • Supporting an entrepreneurial culture

Example project

LOCFOOD (Down District Council, Downpatrick). Improving regional policies and strategies regarding the food-related SMEs in rural areas, to enhance entrepreneurship, business development, competitiveness and economic growth.

Funding programme used: Interreg IVc.

Supporting the shift towards a low-carbon economy in all sectors

Activities to consider

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Increasing the share of renewables
  • Enhancing the energy efficiency of homes and businesses
  • Supporting a culture shift

Promoting climate change adaptation, risk prevention and management

Licco (Devon County Council). Empowering Channel communities to adapt to climate change.

Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency

  • Promoting and encouraging sustainable growth
  • The circular economy
  • ‘Green’ projects

Example project

SSCM4ECAP (Bucks County Council). Developing an innovative ‘bottom-up’ approach to green public procurement.

Funding programme used: LIFE+

Promoting sustainable transport and removing bottlenecks in key network infrastructures

  • Any projects related to public transport
  • Linking deprived communities to jobs
  • Predominantly non-car transport projects (but possibly electric vehicle projects)

Promoting employment and supporting labour mobility

Activities to consider

  • Improving employment opportunities for all, including access to employment and training
  • Entrepreneurship

Example project

European Highway to Entrepreneurship (Leonard Cheshire Disability). A partnership between seven organisations across Europe who will exchange information and best practice on training and support for individuals from disadvantaged groups who want to start their own business.

Funding programme used: Grundtvig (part of the Lifelong Learning Programme).

Promoting social inclusion and combating poverty

Activities to consider

  • Active inclusion
  • Improving employability
  • Tackling fuel poverty
  • Sustainable solutions for people struggling with debt

Example project

Cornwall Works for Learning Disabilities (Cornwall Council) - a ‘hearts and minds’ project to find sustainable jobs for this disadvantaged group.

Funding programme used: ESF (European Social Fund).

Investing in education, skills and lifelong learning by developing education and training infrastructure

Activities to consider

  • Upskilling
  • Professional development
  • Training for unemployed

Example project

Bournemouth Comenius Regio Partnership with Oulu in Finland to exchange best practice on integrating and engaging pupils with little or no English language skills.
