Changes to Council Tax Discounts for Empty Properties from 1st April 2019

On 7th January 2019, Fareham Borough Council resolved to make changes to Council Tax Discounts and Premiums with effect from 1st April 2019. These changes are being made in accordance with the following Legislation: The Local Government Finance Act 2012 and The Rating (Property in Common Occupation) and Council Tax (Empty Dwellings) Act 2018 to allow changes to certain Council Tax Discounts and Premiums.

Unoccupied and Unfurnished Properties

With effect from 1st April 2019, the period of discount will be reduced from 6 months to 1 month when a property first becomes unoccupied and unfurnished. Thereafter the Council Tax will be charged in full.

Unoccupied and Unfurnished Properties undergoing or requiring structural repairs or major works

With effect from 1st April 2019 the amount of discount will be reduced from 100% to 50% for any period up to 12 months, for an unoccupied and unfurnished property undergoing or requiring structural repairs or major works to render it habitable. Thereafter the Council Tax will be charged in full.

Council Tax Premiums for unoccupied and unfurnished properties

With effect from 1st April 2019 properties which have been unoccupied and unfurnished for over 2 years will be subject to a 100% premium on the full Council Tax (previously 50%).
