Good for the planet. Good for business

Bidfood, our distributer, has worked closely with Education Catering to undertake a full review of the products we use. This focussed on reducing single-use plastics and looking at compostable alternatives. They have helped us move to a core range of compostable non-food lines specifically for education catering. For example, during COVID-19 over 18,000 compostable Vegware takeaway lunch boxes were used in Education Catering schools when pupils had to eat in their classrooms for social distancing purposes. Education Catering now use fully compostable packaging products made from sugarcane to help meet their sustainability initiative.

Bidfood has also been focused on their own sustainability goals with a commitment to reach net zero carbon targets by 2045 and aligning to the ‘Science Based Targets’ initiative. The Science Based Targets initiative is a partnership between Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative shows organisations how much and how quickly they need to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to prevent the worst effects of climate change. In 2020 Bidfood delivered 20,686kg of plastic reduction by working with their suppliers. Between January 2021 and July 2021 they reduced plastic in own brand products by a further 13,394kg.
