Transition

About transition

Educational psychologists have a particular interest in transition, since transitions are such a fundamental aspect of life.  We learn to manage transitions from an early age and for most children this is a natural process, rooted in developing secure attachments.  We cannot take this for granted for all children, though.  We know that some transitions can be more difficult for some children and young people.  This might be the case if they have experienced disruption in their relationships and changes or transitions that have not gone well.  Such children and young people, along with the adults in their lives, benefit from carefully planned transitions.

In this section of our website you will find a variety of information about the psychology of transitions. There is also information and documentation about the use of the Transition Partnership Agreement to support transition.

The Transition Partnership Agreement

The Transition Partnership Agreement (TPA) is intended to help transition planning for those children and young people who may be vulnerable at times of transition, for example from an early years setting into school, a change of class, a change of school, a change from school to college. The process, therefore, is designed for parents and carers, children and young people (where appropriate), staff in preschool settings, schools and colleges, and professionals working with the child or young person.

There are four documents, a form and guidance for children in preschool settings, and a form and guidance for children for children and young people of school age.  Quick links to the forms and guidance are below.
