Dickens Recomposed

We have overseen the project since the autumn, with Arts Council England funding. Professor Holly Furneaux of Cardiff University, an advisor for the BBC series "Dickensian", has supported the project as well as the Charles Dickens Museum, London, and Alison Willis who is a composer from Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke.

The aim of the project was for the two classes to create multimedia performances focussing on a Dicken’s character each. The two characters chosen were Mrs Haversham from Great Expectations and Inspector Bucket, Bleak House, the first literary detective.

The year 9 pupils learned about the Dickens characters with help from Professor Furneaux. They have visited the Charles Dickens Museum in London and have been supported in a number of classroom sessions before working with Alison Willis to compose their own multi-media responses. Taking inspiration from the BBC series, they have been exploring the idea of taking Dickens characters and placing them in a new context.

The performance at Milestone Museum, Basingstoke, was a great success and the pupils had been really creative from their use of music to their period costumes.
