Hampshire County Youth Orchestra is holding an Open Day on Saturday 24 March 2018 at Thornden School Concert Hall in Chandler’s Ford, the Orchestra’s rehearsal base.
Players will have the opportunity to play alongside current members of the Orchestra, either in the String Orchestra (HCYSO) or County Youth Orchestra (HCYO), depending on ability.
I hope very much that players will think of auditioning this June and July to join us for next academic year. We have an exciting year ahead with an HCYO performance of Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, a residential course at Easter and a music exchange with a school in Germany who will join with us for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem.
We encourage string candidates from Grade 5 standard (or occasionally Grade 4, eg for double bassists), while wind and brass players tend to need to be more advanced (Grade 7 or 8 and beyond). However, it is certainly worth encouraging any promising player to come along to audition.
Percussion: We are having a special day for percussionist / drum kit players who might be considering branching out onto orchestral percussion. Some of our ex members now in the profession or at music college will be coming to help. The idea is to show just how exciting orchestral percussion can be. This is aimed also at potential percussion students, pianists wanting to try tuned percussion for example – basically a percussion taster day. We are simply asking that players have some basic reading skills – grade 2 percussion/drum kit is fine.
The Open Day is not a part of the audition process, but rather a chance for players to get a taste of the ensembles and what it might be like to be part of them.
Deadline for registrations: Midday, Friday 16 March 2018
