Take a trip though time and find out more about some of our longest-serving members of staff
When I started in Catering Support 15 years ago we were a team of seven: five in the office and two out in the area. Today we are three in the office only, but the focus of the department is still to support the operations teams in primary, secondary and non education sites along with the schools teams.
My days can vary dramatically from sourcing and ordering dessert pots to replace the single use plastic, to challenging a maintenance contractor on the delay in a repair to a piece of equipment, to ordering bar equipment and coffee machines.
We have seen a change in the availability of information accessible between other supporting departments within Hampshire County Council. As we are the County Caterers we have access to the contracts set up through Property Services and other suppliers for equipment on a framework which can give us a broader choice of equipment and services at a pre-approved costing level. Technology continues to have its uses for the department too, we have assisted the schools with online free school meal eligibility checking service. This has seen the increase of free meals to those that may not have applied if a paper form and evidence was still required. We also deal directly with parents who are sometimes reluctant to go to the school with an application.
Recent additions of the devices in the kitchens being directly connected to Catering Support department are proving to be another success and we are keen to watch what comes next and be a part of it.
