If you have any specific questions after reading this information please contact us:
Higher Level Teaching Assistant status is achieved by undergoing a three-day preparation for assessment course delivered by an approved Provider of Preparation (e.g. Hampshire Teaching and Leadership College), followed by assessment by a Regional Provider of Assessment. The three-day course is coaching in preparation of material for assessment, it is not training for the HLTA role. There is an application process for places.
The cost of gaining HLTA status is £810:
- £360 for the three-day course
- £450 for the assessment
EligibilityTeaching Assistants must have specified qualifications in literacy and numeracy and be able to write about how they have worked during the past year one-to-one, with a group and with a whole class (the latter without a teacher present).
Applicants must have qualifications in numeracy and literacy. See Required Qualifications for details. Candidates without these qualifications can take access tests. These tests are to gain access to HLTA. They do not lead to a qualification and can be used for no other purpose. See the HNAP Level 2 Access tests for full information.
Candidate information day
HTLC offers a candidate information day which costs £120 for subscribers or £144 full price. The information day explains the HLTA standards and process. Delegates complete a self-analysis to establish if you are ready for the three-day course.
It is not mandatory to attend the information day. However, HTLC strongly recommends that you do. At the information day, you might discover that you aren't ready to apply for the preparation course. In this case, you would leave with an action plan to enable you to develop the skills and experience you need.
To apply for a place on the three-day course, send us the following completed documentation:
- completed HLTA application form
- completed HLTA readiness analysis
- copies of your numeracy and literacy certificates
