Hampshire Innovation volunteers

Help support children, young people and families and, in turn, help them to avoid the need for extensive Children's Services intervention

About the opportunity

The Canal covers a 32 mile stretch, the vast majority of which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Habitats include the water, bankside areas and woodland, so there are always plenty of conservation tasks to do in managing the site for wildlife and visitors.
This role will work within a team of volunteers, alongside the Canal Ranger, to carry out a variety of conservation tasks

Tasks and duties

Many of the conservation tasks are dependent on the seasons.

Throughout a typical year the conservation tasks could include:

  • coppicing, woodland management and installation of bankside protection
  • maintaining structures such as locks, including painting and mowing
  • keeping the towpath accessible by clearing overgrowing vegetation and maintaining the surface
  • light repairs to canal banks
  • litter picking and general rubbish clearance from site
  • use of canal workboat to clear invasive plants and litter from the water

Training

No previous experience is needed as any tasks and use of hand tools will be demonstrated by the Canal Ranger or an experienced volunteer.
For long term volunteers training is available and can include First Aid, strimmers, mowers and leadership skills.
