Aztec Group Joins Forces with Hampshire Forest Partnership to Plant Mini Forests

Dec 20 2024

The Hampshire Forest Partnership is thrilled to announce an exciting collaboration with Aztec, who have joined our mission to create innovative woodland solutions for the future. Together, we’re planting a unique mini forest at Berrywood near Botley in Eastleigh. This project not only explores new methods of tree planting but also brings together the community and industry to champion environmental stewardship.

Testing Two Planting Techniques

This project is breaking new ground—literally and figuratively—by testing two different approaches to mini forest creation:

  1. No Soil Disturbance Method: This innovative approach seeks to minimize soil disruption, preserving its natural layers and biodiversity.
  2. Traditional Miyawaki Method: Named after the pioneering Japanese botanist, this method focuses on densely planting diverse native species in specially prepared soil. This technique is being funded through the King's Coronation Living Heritage Fund, making it a truly royal endeavour!

By comparing these methods side-by-side, the project aims to discover the most sustainable and effective way to plant mini forests in urban fringe areas, with results that could influence tree-planting practices across the UK.

Monitoring Soil Health

In partnership with Eastleigh Borough Council, we are taking soil samples across the site to scientifically monitor and analyze the soil conditions in the different planting plots. This research will provide valuable insights into how each planting method impacts soil health over time.

The site includes multiple plots, including a section planted in March 2023. This long-term monitoring ensures that the benefits of each technique can be quantified and used to inform future projects.

Aztec: Funding and Hands-On Support

Aztec has played a key role in making this project possible. Their generous funding has helped cover costs for the zero soil disturbance mini forest, and their staff have shown incredible commitment by participating in five planting days, working alongside our team and the local community.

Richard Tombleson, Senior Financial Reporting Manager played a key role in establishing the collaboration with Hampshire Forest Partnership, he said: “Getting involved and seeing the mini forest come to life has been truly rewarding. By supporting the project with funding and using our volunteering days to help plant trees, we hope to contribute to a greener, brighter future and inspire others to join this important cause. I’m proud to be part of a team that's committed to its environmental responsibilities and actively engaging with the community.”

This hands-on involvement reflects Aztec’s dedication to both environmental responsibility and employee engagement.

A Partnership for Progress

The project wouldn’t be possible without the support of Eastleigh Borough Council, whose collaboration has been instrumental in bringing the mini forest to life. Together, we’re transforming Berrywood into a hub of ecological innovation and biodiversity.

Why Mini Forests Matter

Mini forests like the one at Berrywood offer huge benefits. They:

  • capture carbon and combat climate change
  • boost biodiversity by creating rich, natural habitats
  • enhance soil health and water retention
  • inspire communities to engage with nature.

Join the Movement

As we continue to plant trees and test new methods, the Hampshire Forest Partnership invites more businesses and communities to join us. Together, we can pioneer new solutions and leave a lasting green legacy for future generations.
