Census: 1961 and all that

Exhibition held Tuesday to Thursday

1 January 2022 9:30am to 26 February 2022 4pm

The Shuttleworth Family

This exhibition was produced by Hampshire Archives and Local Studies in 2011 to mark that census year.

The first ‘modern’ census in Britain, recording the names of individuals, was taken in 1841 – purely numerical censuses having begun in 1801. After 100 years, census returns are made available for public consultation, becoming an excellent tool for anyone interested in family and social history.

A census has been taken in every year ending in a 1 since 1801, except in 1941. In the early years all the data was extracted manually by clerks; 1961 marked the first year that computer analysis was used.

Dates: 1 January 2022 to 26 February 2022, during Hampshire Record Office opening hours
