Over a Century of Women Policing in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight - On-site talk

17 March 2025 6pm to 7pm

Woman in police uniform

Dr Clifford Williams, author of 'A History of Women Policing Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 1915-2016' is the speaker for this event.

The origin of women police officers can be found in World War One, and Southampton was one force which pioneered their deployment.

Resistance to women policing the county of Hampshire lasted until the 1940s when World War Two brought about significant deployment of women in all police forces. The talk will take us through the changes brought about by Sex Discrimination legislation, right up to the appointment of the first woman Chief Constable of Hampshire in 2016.
