‘I remember wearing that the first time around!’ Clothing and how it was worn is one of the many fascinating, though often overlooked, aspects that local archive film can reveal. Join us for this online screening, as we explore the archives for the curious, fascinating, and fabulous fashions of the past century.

Wessex Film and Sound Archive holds over 38,000 historic film and sound items telling the story of our region, central southern England. This online screening with introduction will showcase film from the extensive collection that highlights some of the fashionable gems of our local past.

We’ll be joined in conversation by Alison Carter. Alison, holding an MA in history, art history, and dress history, spent 25 years with Hampshire Museums Service as Senior Keeper of Art. She specialised in dress and textiles, curating touring exhibitions such as "Undress'd for the Beach," and showcasing special collections including "Quilts," and "Little Black Dress." Alison has authored various works on historic underwear, 19th-century fashions, and Mary Tudor's Wardrobe, significantly enriching the field with her expertise. She is also an antique textiles collector, ancestry researcher, and avid reader of biographies.

You may have seen some of the footage we’ll be sharing at an onsite event in May 2023.

The online screenings are not recorded and are only viewable live on the date.
