Our people were ‘Chapel’

Records of nonconformist churches for family and local history

29 November 2021 11am to 1pm

Wildhern - nonconformists

Some families have a long tradition of membership of Methodist, Congregational, Baptist or Independent churches and chapels, or Quaker meetings, whilst some of us may only discover a connection if we are unable to find an entry we expected in a parish register and start looking more widely.

If you are researching a family who had links with nonconformist churches, or you are a local historian and want to find out about the congregations that met in your town or village, this session will give you an introduction to the types of record that were kept by a range of Protestant Christian denominations outside the established church, using examples from Hampshire, held in Hampshire Record Office or elsewhere (the session will also briefly refer to Catholic records). This session will include a chance to see some original documents.
