This foyer exhibition looks at the work and discoveries of the Hampshire Medieval Graffiti Project. This volunteer-led and -run project was set up in 2016 by the Hampshire Field Club and Archaeology Society. It is one of several county surveys which locate and record historical graffiti.

Graffiti is a valuable historical resource. It was made by ordinary people whose voices were otherwise unrecorded and gives insight into their lives, fears and beliefs. It is found in most historic churches and domestic buildings, but its value was not recognised until relatively recently.

People left their mark for many different reasons and this exhibition illustrates just some of the stories graffiti can tell.

Opening dates/times: 9:30am 8 January to 4pm 26 March 2025 during Hampshire Record Office opening hours.
