Volunteering with Hampshire Libraries

Start the next chapter in your volunteering story

Libraries are a great place to volunteer, and giving just a few hours of your time can make a huge difference. Our volunteers help out in all areas of the library - you could be helping library customers, running events or organising activities for children and adults alike.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet new people and make friends. You’ll work alongside our friendly library staff, other volunteers and members of the public.

In 2017, library volunteers donated over 46,000 hours of their time and expertise. Hampshire Libraries are proud of our volunteers and we value the contribution they make.

Branch volunteers

I like the amount of variety you get as a library volunteer. Volunteering enables me to meet new people and to form new friendships in my local community.

Do you want to:

  • help your local community?
  • work with a friendly team?
  • boost your skills and confidence?
  • enhance your CV and receive free training?

Library branch volunteer

We offer varied and flexible volunteering opportunities and are looking for approachable and enthusiastic individuals to join the team.

Whether you enjoy reading and chatting to people, or want to help someone conquer their fears of using a computer, we have an opportunity for you.

Get involved with events and activities held within our libraries and assist members of the public in accessing our services.

Summer Reading Challenge volunteers

The Summer Reading Challenge is all about the children and it’s great to see the chuffed look on their faces as the weeks go on. Regardless of reading ability, I like encouraging all the children to just enjoy reading, that’s very rewarding.

Do you want to:

  • support reading in young children?
  • talk to children about books they have read?
  • boost your interpersonal skills?
  • gain valuable workplace experience?

Volunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to give something back to your community.

Every year the Summer Reading Challenge engages thousands of children, encouraging them to read over the long school holidays.

You’ll get to work with children by encouraging them to enjoy reading and take part, as well as handing out medals and certificates to those who finish.

With full training and support, you’ll pick up some great skills and experience for your personal statement, university application or CV.

Home Library Service volunteers

I feel very lucky I have the opportunity to work as a volunteer in the Home Library Service. I understand how important this role is when I see the satisfaction and the joy of my customers.

Do you want to:

  • meet new people?
  • deliver books to those who find accessing libraries difficult?
  • provide a vital service in your community?
  • share your love of reading?
library volunteering for home library service

For people who can’t get to the library, the Home Library Service is there to do door-to-door deliveries all year round.

The Home Library Service relies on volunteers. Your contribution will ensure that some of the most isolated members of our community can still access the valuable services offered by Hampshire's library service.

Just a few hours of your time each month can help those who can’t get to the library due to ill-health, disability or caring responsibilities.
