Hampshire libraries offer a wide range of services. These include different types of memberships, a library to your door facility, events, workshops, iPad lending, play sets, reading group sets, access to special collections and much more.

Library careers
  • Access memberships

    Access membership offers free hire of library items for anyone who is unable to read standard print.

    • You can borrow up to 30 items at one time
    • Audiobooks are free to borrow
    • Reservations are free
    • You will not be charged for renewals or overdue items
    • Apply in your local library

    An annual membership is available for audiobooks on Tape, CD, MP3 CD or Playaway audio player.

    • one year membership costs £20
    • no limit to the total you may borrow during the year
    • no charge for renewals or overdue items
    • reserving an item costs 70p
  • Boardmaker

    Create symbol-based displays to support people with communication or memory impairment.

    With Boardmaker communication software we offer:
    • A flexible way of creating symbol-based displays
    • Useful for supporting those with communication or memory impairment
    • Free access to the software and support
    • Free printing laminating

  • Bookstart

    Bookstart is a national programme that encourages parents and carers to enjoy books with children.

    • Bookstart Baby packs are gifted by Health Visitors during the child’s first year
    • A second pack is gifted by infant and primary schools as part of the induction into Year R
    • Parents of Home Educated children can email bookstart@hants.gov.uk or telephone 0845 6035631 to obtain a pack for their child

  • Carer memberships

    Care homes, sheltered accommodation and playgroups are among the groups that can benefit.

    • You can borrow up to 100 items from a library at one time
    • Audiobooks are free to borrow
    • You can reserve up to 10 items at one time for free
    • No overdue charges

  • Digital library

    Most of our Digital Library resources are available for use at home but some are only available to use in libraries. Please ask a member of staff at your local library for more information.

  • DOTS (iPad lending)

    Library DOTS (Digital; Options, Training and Support) is our tablet computer lending project to help tackle social isolation and improve digital literacy.

    Whats available:
    • 3G enabled tablets for eligible Hampshire residents
    • Four week loan period
    • Training provided

  • Events for children

    Things to do for children and families at your local library.

    Every school holiday there are events on in a library near you, most are free and great fun. For younger children popular rhymetime and storytime sessions run weekly in many libraries.

  • Good neighbour scheme

    If you are unable to visit the library yourself this scheme will allow a nominated person to be responsible for your book loans and returns.

    • Library staff can assist your nominated person in choosing books for you
    • No charges for overdues or reservations from Hampshire stock

    Please ask your Good Neighbour to talk to library staff the next time they visit on your behalf.

  • Home library service

    A free service if you can't get to the library due to ill-health, disability or caring responsibilities the library can come to you. If you would like to borrow a particular title from Hampshire’s stock, we can get it for you.

    The Makery is a flexible environment where you can get hands on with exciting digital kit share knowledge and try out new creative ideas and tools. There are two Makery sites, in Fleet Library and Fareham Library.

  • Mental health support

    The Reading Well Books on Prescription is a national scheme available with recommended books from a range of self-help books which have proven value in helping people who suffer from common mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, anger and panic attacks.

    Music scores and performance sets are available for loan.

    • Music scores available singly as a standard book loan
    • Performance sets - vocal scores, libretti and orchestral sets are also available

    You can borrow sets of plays for your group, school, or society.

    • Over 900 playsets available
    • A range from standard classics to modern plays
    • Single copies also available at no extra cost

  • Reminiscence collection

    The Reminiscence Collection includes books, posters, games and quizzes, postcards, printed and recorded music, jigsaws, photographs and talking tapes.

    These have been chosen to stimulate and support reminiscence and may be of particular use to carers working with people with dementia.

    • Up to 5 items can be borrowed at a time
    • Items are held in Basingstoke Discovery Centre and can be reserved from any Hampshire library branch
    • Overdue items are charged at 15p per day to a maximum of £6

    The special collections services include a rich and diverse range of books, pamphlets, news cutting, videos and photographs. These can include items available for loan.
