Volunteering with Hampshire Libraries

Giving just a few hours of your time can make a huge difference

Hampshire Library Service provides access to library resources for more than 1.3 million people each year, and volunteers play a massive part in the work we do.

As a volunteer, you could be helping our library customers, running events or organising activities for children and adults alike.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, gain varied experience, meet new people  and give something back.

Working alongside our friendly library teams, you’ll help to deliver library services to your local community, including:

  • supporting children’s literacy during the Summer Reading Challenge
  • providing customer service in our branches
  • bringing books to people who can’t get to the library with the Home Library Service

If you’re friendly, a good communicator and looking to help people make the most out of their library, apply today.

I like the amount of variety you get as a library volunteer. Volunteering enables me to meet new people and to form new friendships in my local community.
library volunteering for home library service
I feel very lucky I have the opportunity to work as a volunteer in the Home Library Service. I understand how important this role is when I see the satisfaction and the joy of my customers.

Home library service volunteer

The Home Library Service provides books, audiobooks and other library resources to those who are unable to visit the library.

As a Home Library Service volunteer, you’ll select and deliver reading material to customers, based on their preferences.

Summer reading challenge volunteer

The annual Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to keep children reading during the summer holidays.

As a Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer, you’ll help children register for the challenge, talk to them about the books they’ve read and encourage them to share their views.

The Summer Reading Challenge is all about the children and it’s great to see the chuffed look on their faces as the weeks go on. Regardless of reading ability, I like encouraging all the children to just enjoy reading, that’s very rewarding.
