Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council, was joined by local councillors, partners from Test Valley Borough Council, members of the Romsey project board and the Romsey Town Centre Manager, to officially cut a ribbon to mark the end of the main works in Market Place.

Councillor Humby, who is also Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, said: “With town centres across the country facing challenges, we have invested in Romsey for the future, delivering improvements aimed at encouraging more people to visit more often and stay longer.”

“These works have been designed to enhance the environment and support the economic viability of Romsey’s historic town centre - while improving accessibility for all who come to the town. The Market Place works were the third and largest part of an overall enhancement project for Romsey Town Centre. Together with the two completed schemes in Church Street and Bell Street, the total investment in improvements in the town centre come to over £3 million.”

Improvements to Church Street were completed in 2016 and to Bell Street last year.

The main element of the upgrade to Market Place, which has taken around six months to complete, is the large piazza style area that encompasses the Lord Palmerston Statue within the middle of Market Place to provide a new space for public events.

Materials were used that are complementary to the historic town centre, including York paving. The scheme aims to create a safer environment for all road users including pedestrians and cyclists by reducing traffic speeds and making the area more attractive for those who live, work and shop there.

Knights Brown carried out the project on behalf of Hampshire County Council.
