Hampshire’s popular interfaith calendar, created by school children from across the county, has been launched for 2019 at an event at Hampshire County Council’s headquarters in Winchester.
During Interfaith Week (11-18 November 2018), more than 30 children from infant, primary and secondary schools and their parents, carers and friends attended the launch of the calendar to receive certificates for their winning designs from the Chairman of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Elaine Still.
Councillor Still said: “Yet again, our school pupils’ designs have shown outstanding quality and understanding of the different festivals and religious days celebrated throughout the year.
“The calendar is colourful, meaningful and beautiful to look at and I would like to congratulate all the young artists who contributed. Positive interaction is crucial for good relations between the diverse communities of Hampshire and I am pleased that the County Council is once again celebrating our diversity with this calendar.”
Councillor Roz Chadd, who is chair of the Hampshire Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE), co-presented the awards. She said:
“In Hampshire we take seriously the importance of children and young people exploring what it can mean to live with a religious outlook on life and other ways of life, including those informed by a non-religious perspective. Our Agreed Syllabus Living Difference III provides the basis of good teaching in religious education helping children be open to the different ways in which people live within our local and wider communities and the world.”
Children were encouraged to produce artwork based on their religious education lessons relating to a religious festival or event. The calendar competition is managed by the RE team in Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service (HIAS) and the Hampshire Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). Each winning calendar design relates to one of more than 100 religious festivals featured in the calendar from nine of the county’s faith groups - Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism and the Baha’i faith.
The Hampshire Interfaith Calendar costs £5.00 and is available through the Hampshire online shop.
