Executive Member for Education, Councillor Peter Edgar, said: “Some people’s abilities don’t shine through in academic exams, but that doesn’t mean they can’t succeed. That’s why we offer other ways to get started on the career ladder. I take a deep personal interest in this scheme, and I have seen young people come out of school with no qualifications, begin a traineeship, and quickly build the confidence and skills to join the working world.
“I have been very impressed to see young people turn things round so quickly. Often all it takes is a bit of support and guidance from our advisers. With a new round of applications closing on 27 January, I would encourage any young person who is unsure what to do next, to get in touch with us right away.”
People aged 16 to 24, whose exam results or experience do not qualify them for an apprenticeship or other job-based training scheme, can apply for a traineeship instead. There are different levels of traineeship, and each trainee starts at the level that is right for them. There is tailored, one-to-one support available as well, for those who are not sure where to begin.
Traineeships can involve a work experience placement, confidence-building activities, and practice at things like CV writing and interview skills. There is also the option to progress through all levels of traineeship and then get support to move onto an apprenticeship.

Below is the story of a trainee from Winchester who is keen to recommend traineeships to others:
Grace Tyson, 18, from Winchester, became a trainee with the Facilities Management (FM) department at Hampshire County Council. Facilities Management involves looking after the building and keeping facilities running smoothly. Grace has now progressed to a Facilities Management Apprenticeship and hopes to make her career in the FM industry.
Looking back on her traineeship Grace says, “After my two weeks of basic training it came to the placement. I chose three areas, and I thoroughly enjoyed them all – however, I found Facilities Management and it became my new home. Every day was different, and I came to find how important the role is to the business, and also to discover that is where I want to continue working in the future.”
Life is very different now for Grace. “I wake up every morning, look in the mirror and think what a difference. I’m no longer lost like I was a year ago. I didn’t expect to work for one of the biggest organisations in Hampshire, but I’m here. I do things like provide security in meetings and events, deliver parcels and provide a friendly service to internal and external customers. I found my purpose: It’s helping people.”
“When I’m asked where I want to be in five years, I say “here” because I see my own potential and what I have to offer to Facilities Management work. I dream of being a manager, as good as the one I have now.”
Grace is clear that for her, a traineeship was a major turning point in a difficult time. “It wasn’t just a chance for a career,” she says, “It was another shot at life.”
