Gosport Discovery Centre’s remodelling to begin on 4 June

Gosport Discovery Centre is set to offer visitors even more services and improved facilities, following remodelling work by Hampshire County Council that will begin on 4 June 2018. The library will be closed for six weeks, reopening in time for the school summer holidays

The new look Discovery Centre will provide a range of facilities for local people including bookable meeting rooms for community groups; a ‘Changing Place’ toilet facility (for people whose needs are not met by standard accessible toilets), as well as additional accessible toilets; improved facilities for health clinics; plus improvements to the reception area, café and general library environment. Office space at the Discovery Centre will also be modernised to provide efficient workspace that can be better used by staff across a range of services.

Hampshire County Council's Executive Member for Culture, Recreation and Countryside, Councillor Andrew Gibson, said: “Gosport’s Discovery Centre is already a thriving community venue offering library services, community spaces and a café. By relocating more services to this popular venue, we are able to give local people more of the things they need under one roof, and get maximum use out of the building.

“I’m looking forward to seeing our customers return to the new-look facilities later in the summer. Our priority has been to ensure the majority of the building work can be completed in June and July, enabling us to reopen the library for the school summer holiday, and welcome the many children who will be taking on the Summer Reading Challenge this year.”

The work will involve closing the Discovery Centre on Monday 4 June 2018 and re-opening on Saturday 14 July 2018. Some work to the building will continue beyond this date but should not impact significantly on library customers.

This project, costing £700,000, forms part of the County Council’s ‘Community Hubs’ strategy, and the Library Service’s Strategy to 2020, which both aim to make better use of public buildings, providing modern, vibrant community spaces for residents to enjoy. Several libraries around Hampshire are already hosting additional complementary services, such as Register Offices and Citizens Advice Bureaux.

Before the six-week closure, additional items can be borrowed by library customers, and no items on loan will be due back during the closure period. Customers will be welcome to use other nearby libraries, and the e-books and e-resources available on the library website. Renewals and reservations will still be available through self-service on the website and through the Council’s telephone contact centre. Customers needing to Register Births, Deaths or give Notice of Marriage/Civil Partnership can make an appointment at any one of 15 offices within Hampshire, the nearest office to Gosport being Fareham.
