03. Printers, Booksellers and Libraries in Hampshire, 1750-1800
Hampshire Papers 3: Printers, Booksellers and Libraries in Hampshire, 1750-1800
by John Oldfield (1993)

A study of the book trade in Hampshire during the second half of the eighteenth century, this paper tells a story of rapid growth and expansion. The 1770s and 1780s in particular witnessed a proliferation of printers and booksellers, and, just as important, the emergence of the circulating library as a popular local diversion.

Bookselling was a demanding business; the typical bookshop not only sold books but also stationery, patent medicines, perfumes, jewellery and hardware. If the shop was well established, the owner might also run a circulating library, a bindery and possibly also a printing office.

Using newspapers and local records, the paper looks at all these activities and gives an insight into a quiet revolution that not only affected the large urban centres (Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester) but also small towns like Romsey, Fareham, and Newport on the Isle of Wight. The paper includes useful lists of eighteenth-century Hampshire booksellers, printers and circulating libraries.
