23. Stand-Off in the Solent: The American Civil War comes to Hampshire
Hampshire Papers 23: Stand-Off in the Solent: The American Civil War comes to Hampshire
by Michael Hughes (2002)

This paper tells of a little known incident in the American Civil War - one that happened in the waters off Southampton and the Isle of Wight in late 1861 and early 1862, and for a time was a source of great consternation for the British Government and a cause of much excitement and interest for Hampshire's residents. The incident involved two American warships - the Confederate Nashville and the Federal Tuscarora - who for a number of weeks in January 1862 played an intriguing game of 'cat and mouse' in the Solent and Southampton Water, a game which ended on 4 February 1862 when the Nashville managed to make her escape.

The paper reveals considerable local interest in the two warships, and also the concern of the British Government and naval authorities. It includes illustrations of the Nashville and Tuscarora, as well as contemporary maps of Southampton and the Solent, and portraits of some of those involved.
