25. Wilfred Buckley of Moundsmere and the Clean Milk Campaign

25. Wilfred Buckley of Moundsmere and the Clean Milk Campaign

This paper is an account of the life and work of a remarkable man, Wilfred Buckley, who came to live in Hampshire in 1906, at Preston Candover, and was to play a significant role in the campaign to improve the hygienic quality of the nation's milk supply.

The paper seeks to give Buckley his due recognition. It traces his origins in the business community of Victorian Birmingham and describes how he came to purchase the Moundsmere Estate, Preston Candover, and how this awakened a keen interest in farming and especially in clean milk production. The paper goes on to show how Buckley became the virtual leader of the clean milk movement in the years 1914-33 and how his endeavours laid the basis for the rapid improvement in milk quality which began in the late 1930s and which was completed during the post-war period.
