To create a paper cut picture in the style of artist Henri Matisse.

  • Cut shapes using a template
  • Use composition methods to arrange and fix shapes
  • Describe and use positive and negative shapes
  • Create a final paper cut picture/collage

Henri Matisse created some of his best-known art in the final decade of his life, and he made it from the simplest materials: shapes cut from colourful sheets of paper. He described these “cut-out” works as “drawing with scissors,”

We will look at colours, patterns and positive and negative shapes and how to arrange them to build a pleasing composition. You will be guided with demonstrations on how to use the templates or freehand cutting to cut colourful shapes, arrange them and fix.

No previous knowledge is necessary, suitable for all abilities.
