In 2007, whilst on duty in Germany, he met his partner, Dirk, and entered into a civil partnership. He made history by becoming the first Army Chaplain to do so. In 2008, Pat became the LGBT lead for the army and, is currently, an LGBT Champion for the army. After promotion as a Deputy Assistant Chaplain General, Pat served in a variety of roles before moving to the Armed Forces Chaplaincy Centre which is part of the Defence Academy.

He is currently the Army Director at Amport House. Outside of work Pat continues to campaign for equal rights and enjoys family, holidays, socialising and the occasional adventure training.
