Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: Origins and Afterlives at Havant Library

Tuesday 27th February 2018

7.30pm

With Charlotte Boyce - Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Portsmouth.

From the time of its first publication in 1818 to the present day, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein has been subject to numerous adaptations and re-imaginings.

What accounts for its extraordinary versatility and enduring appeal? To answer this question, this talk will first return to the origins of the text and its reflection of Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley's Romantic ideals.

The talk will then explore the novel's extensive afterlife in literature, on stage and on screen, highlighting the way in which later iterations of the story subtly alter or re-focus Shelley's original themes in response to shifting social and cultural concerns.
