Keynote Speaker – Kate Cairns, Kate Cairns Associates (KCA)

The importance of building community resilience.

Research indicates that, in order for our most vulnerable children to thrive, it is essential that we pay attention to the attachment needs not only of those children, but also of the network of adults around them.

Kate is an author, speaker and trainer with an international reputation for her work around attachment, trauma and resilience, particularly in relation to vulnerable children and young people. She has been a social worker for forty years, and a trainer for twenty years.

With her husband Brian and their three birth children, Kate provided a permanent family for twelve other children between 1975 and 1997. In 2002 she published Attachment, Trauma and Resilience, which explored how these three key concepts could provide a structure for understanding ourselves and those with whom we work.

Please select 2 x workshops in total - 1 Morning and 1 Afternoon

Workshops

  1. Introduction to Resilience Mapping (Kate Cairns, KCA)

Kate will introduce a tool to support practitioners to use what they know about a child's (or adult's) history of attachment and/or trauma to assess their level of resilience in relation to each of six domains and at various ecological levels.

  1. The Importance of Touch for Children’s Development (Sue Sheppard, Educational Psychologist)

Deprived of human touch, children fail to thrive and may die. This workshop will look at up-to-date research into the neuropsychology of touch and it’s importance in human growth and development. It will also look at what can be learned from animal and cross-cultural human studies into touch. There will be opportunities to try some simple but fun techniques that can be used with young children.

  1. The Impact of Early Attachment (Julia Alfano, Educational Psychologist)

This workshop will look at the impact early attachment has on the areas of self-regulation; learning; social development; and the development of emotional literacy.

  1. The EYE Toolkit for Children in Care (Michelle Cain, Virtual School)

Children in care have more often then not experienced relational trauma and loss; this of course is not just exclusive to children in care but also to wider vulnerable groups. This means engaging in pre-school settings can be very difficult. These children can present with a wide range of behaviours in an attempt to communicate to us how they are feeling. The purpose of the EYE toolkit is to enable early years settings to have a way of identifying and understanding children in care in terms of their unmet needs and areas of difficulty. This workshop will look at how to use the needs analysis tool and practical strategies.
