7.30pm

Winchester Discovery Centre

A Winchester Heritage Open Days special fundraising event. This event is kindly being sponsored by Shentons.

It is often forgotten, but the roots of England lie here in Winchester, England’s Royal City, before the Norman Conquest, when Winchester was the crucible of politics, culture and ideas.

Join Michael Wood and a panel of eminent Anglo-Saxon specialists as they discuss how the foundations of the English state were laid by three generations of the Wessex royal family, Alfred the Great, his son Edward and daughter Aethelflaed, and his grandson Athelstan, and how, without them, the history of Britain might have been radically different.

This was also a period when many remarkable women shaped our history and the group will be putting forward their arguments as to whom they believe to be the most extraordinary Anglo-Saxon woman.

45-minute discussion, followed by an opportunity for audience questions. Books will be also be on sale from P&G Wells in the foyer.

Michael Wood, historian and film-maker, is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester. He has written many best-selling books and has made well over 100 documentary films, among them ’the most innovative history series ever on TV’ (The Independent). He recently received the British Academy President’s Medal for outreach in History.

The panel includes Professor Barbara Yorke, Dr Ryan Lavelle and Dr Katherine Weikert, all from the University of Winchester.

Please support this special fundraising event to help secure the future of Heritage Open Days in Winchester.
