“An extraordinary man – achieving against all the odds” Jon Snow

Gulwali Passarlay was sent away from Afghanistan at the age of twelve after his father was killed in a gun battle with the US Army. He made a 12-month trek across Europe, suffering hunger, making a terrifying journey across the Mediterranean in a tiny boat and enduring a desolate month in Calais. Somehow he survived and made it to Britain in the back of a refrigerated lorry, speaking virtually no English. Authorities would not believe he was only 13. Eventually he was fostered, sent to school and won a place at Manchester University to study politics.

Today more than half the world’s refugees are children. Gulwali, author of ‘The Lightless Sky’, gives a voice and a face to the refugee crisis.

He was invited to speak by Southampton and Winchester Visitors’ Group (SWVG), a charity which supports destitute asylum seekers living locally.
