Steady and Strong balance classes
Physical activity, including strength and balance, is vital for healthy ageing
Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older and the good news is, they can often be prevented.
Steady and Strong classes for older adults have been developed by experts to increase your strength and balance, helping you to stay stronger for longer and able to keep doing the things you love. Classes are delivered by a network of independent and leisure centre-based instructors across Hampshire.
We offer a range of classes, including exercise, music, and dance options, as well as online classes that you can join from home. Keep reading to discover more about each class and find what works for you.
If you have had a fall in the last three months you should first talk to your GP team. You may be eligible for support through the NHS, which can include NHS balance classes.
Live Longer Better has more information about how to prevent a fall.

Steady and Strong classes
Improve strength and balance through a combination of seated and standing exercises, with chair support for those who need it.
Steady and Strong Dance
Steady and Strong Dance classes combine some specific exercises to improve strength and balance, with the creativity and energy of dance. Improving strength and balance can help to reduce the chance of having a fall in the future.
Our Steady and Strong Dance instructors are all experienced in teaching movement classes to older people, and you don’t need prior dance or exercise experience. Movements are both seated and standing.
Steady and Strong Dance classes are suitable for adults who meet all of these conditions:
- You can walk around your home without use of a walking aid
- You can go out and about without physical assistance from another person
- You can take a backwards step without concern and turn 180 degrees without needing external support
- You have not had a recent fall resulting in injury, frequent falls in the last 6 months, or an unexplained fall (loss of consciousness)
- You are not waiting for a GP appointment or follow up appointment for an uncontrolled condition, or for a physiotherapy assessment or treatment plan
