The Aviary is one of two nurseries owned by Hampshire County Council. The other is Park Nursery
- About the nursery
The Aviary Nursery is an inclusive setting offering:
- day care (8am to 6pm, 51 weeks a year) for children and babies from 6 months
- sessional care (9am to 12 noon or 1pm to 4pm term time only) for children from 2 years
We are the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Hub for the Eastleigh area.
Twenty children (ten in the morning and ten in the afternoon) are placed here by the local education authority for sessional care, because we can meet their development needs well.
Children have an opportunity to learn:
- to accept the different needs of individual children
- various ways of communicating, interacting and playing together
Staff are qualified to level three or above and have a range of experience in looking after children of different ages and stages of development.
As a nursery we have four in house training days each year to ensure staff professional development is kept up-to-date.
Children’s meals are prepared in the nursery kitchen by a HC3S employed cook.
- Breakfast is a choice of cereal, fruit, milk or water and toast
- Snacks for morning and afternoon are a choice (or one piece of each) a piece of fruit, a vegetable stick and bread stick or Melba toast, milk or water.
- Lunch is the cooked meal of the day with a pudding and a high tea consisting of sandwiches, vegetable sticks and cake, biscuit or yogurt
Children can access water throughout the day. Individual dietary requirements or allergies are always met.
The Bluebells room has four cots for children to sleep in as well as three double buggies which can be slept in outside.
As children grow we have some lovely wicker baskets which have comfy sleep mats and a sheet in for the children to sleep in.
Older children use the sleep mats.
- Family groups
Peppa and Kipper are our two family groups which consist of a group of key people and their children.
Practitioners in each family group support each other with their key children and are the extended family for your child at nursery.
We aim for your child to stay in the same family group all through nursery, although their key person may change.
Our nursery is made up of three rooms which children move between as they grow and develop: Bluebells, Poppies and Sunflowers rooms
- Your child’s learning journey
Each child has a key person allocated to them. This essential attachment should be planned for and encouraged. We offer a home visit before they start nursery. This helps to build up the bond between the family and the setting.
The key person is a special member of staff who gets to know your family and welcomes you into the nursery. They carry out observations about what they are playing with and doing at nursery. The information they gain about your child will be used as a record of part of their learning journey. It will also influence what happens in the nursery room and garden.
Your child’s learning journey is a record of your child’s experiences and development at The Aviary. The learning journey is a collaborative book produced with input from home as well as nursery (and sometimes other settings).
As the key person gets to know your child they will start to plan (with you) their next stage of development. Planning different activities or play encourage children to develop in a specific area. This information is recorded in your child’s learning journey and is available to view.
We collate the information about children’s progress throughout the year to ensure we are offering the right opportunities for children to develop and grow.
