Support from the Communication and Interaction Team

We support children and young people to access education and thrive in their environment. Your child may receive specialist support from us, which we provide in a variety of ways.

The school will inform you of any meetings or visits to observe or work with your child.

Our involvement is needs-led; cases will be closed once schools have the tools to meet the identified needs of the child.

Support for your child

We may support your child by:

  • observing your child in the classroom or during unstructured times
  • modelling approaches with your child and school/college staff in class, in a group or 1:1
  • exploring with your child how they learn best and what strategies are effective for them
  • developing your child's awareness of their strengths and difficulties and ability to make decisions and manage transitions
  • supporting requests for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and attending annual reviews where appropriate

Support for the school

This is likely to be the type of support your child receives most of. Supporting the people who work with your child means everyone who has contact with your child is able to understand how to meet their needs.

We may support the school by:

  • signposting to resources, training or other services
  • providing advice to be implemented using a 'plan-do-review' cycle
  • discussing your child's needs with their teacher and/or Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator
  • Recommending appropriate support strategies or intervention
  • coaching, training and awareness for individual staff members or the whole school
  • contributing to annual reviews of a child's education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • advising on transitions between schools
