Equipping the Armada: D-Day infrastructure at Lepe
As park of the New Forest Walking Festival, Find out more about Lepe's WW2 role.
Take a tour of the short Solent waterfront at Lepe Country Park in the New Forest, which played host to major preparations for Operation Overlord during the Second World War.
As well as embarkation hards for landing craft, large sections of the famous prefabricated Mulberry Harbour were built on the shore and the PLUTO pipeline ran across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Traces of these installations, as well as First and Second World War gun batteries, can still be seen and this walk will highlight them and explain their significance to one of the most famous events of the 1940s.
The walk is along the shore at Lepe but includes sections with pebbles as well as sand so suitable footwear will be needed. There are some short slopes but no significant hills. It can get quite windy on the shore so please dress appropriately.
