We’ve gone all hi-tech this week by bringing you two videos filmed inside Netley Chapel!
The chapel has been closed for many months in preparation for contractors, who have now started on site to conserve this historic building. The chapel was part of the world’s largest military hospital, which was a personal project for Queen Victoria.
These videos will give you a sneak peek inside the chapel, highlighting how the building will be returned to its original glory, how the Victorians were able to ignite gas lamps high on the ceiling and ensure everyone at the hospital knew the time - even without a pocket watch. Queen Victoria even makes an appearance (aka local parish councillor and park volunteer Maureen Queen).
One last thing – please remember we are amateurs at this, so it’s not a Hollywood production (but not far off!) Enjoy the videos – there’ll be many more over the next year updating you on the conservation project.
