Runway’s End’s environmental programme is all about bringing environmental education to life while having fun. But you don’t have to take our word for it! We spoke to some primary school students half-way through their visit to see how they were getting on and what they had learned so far.
A group of children play a game with a black plastic pipe

What has been your favourite activity so far and why did you enjoy it?

‘My favourite activity was the pipe game because we had to work together, communicate with our teams, and it wasn't really easy. If it went wrong, you had to get up and try again. It really challenged your brain to move around.’

‘I liked cooking brownies in oranges, because they were really fun to make, and we could eat them after. I didn’t know that you could cook them like that - that you could put things inside the oranges. The brownies were really yummy, and I think I’m going to try it at home.’

‘My favourite thing was the problem solving, because it gets your brain thinking.’

What new fact or skill have you learned on your trip?

‘I learned where cocoa beans grow when we made brownies in oranges.’

‘Today was my first time trying to make fire. I didn't know how to make fire before.’

How did you find working with your classmates in the teambuilding activities?

‘I liked working with my classmates. I already do it at school when we play sports, and it’s fun to do new teamwork things.’

‘I found it quite easy to communicate with people, because I play loads of sport. But it was also kind of hard because [the activities were] with a lot more people than normal. We had to talk to everyone to get them to move where they needed to be. It was a lot of fun.’

Have any of the activities changed the way you think about being outside?

Normally I do my problem-solving inside, but now I know that whatever the problems are, you can solve them outside as well.’

‘For games, I used to think that playing inside would be a better option. But now I think that being outside makes it more fun. The air's more fresh and you can run around. It's really nice.’

‘I really like it. There's loads of nature, and you can just look around and see leaves and trees everywhere around you.’

What activity are you looking forward to most?

‘The shelter building, because I love building the big shelters. I also like building things out of Lego so I think it might be like that.’

Why is it important that we protect the planet we live on?

‘If you look around you, nature is really beautiful, and we don't want to spoil it.’

‘We don't want the Earth to get too hot because then there will be no snow, which is very bad. It won’t be cold anytime. And in the summer, it will be the most hot time ever, because it's getting hotter and hotter each year. We have to stop that.’
